Day Away Program

This program is for those living in the community and in the early to mid stages of Alzheimer's disease or for those who have other dementia related challenges.

This program has two equally important goals:
  1. To provide an enjoyable day of activities for clients in a setting which is secure and comfortable.
  2. To provide a full day of respite for the client's caregiver.
These clients visit Abbotsford House for the day, allowing their caregivers a much-needed break. They are picked up by the Glebe Centre Van ("Marjorie") or dropped off by a family member.

On arrival they are welcomed by the two Day Away Program Coordinators and their group of volunteers. We ensure a high ratio of staff/volunteers to clients so that each client gets lots of individual attention as well as opportunities to participate in activities that match their specific interests and abilities.

The day is structured so that clients move between quiet activities (such as card games, discussion groups and board games) to those that are more lively (such as shuffleboard, snooker or modified aerobics). The program also alternates between activities which involve the whole group and those which are done in smaller groups or one on one with a volunteer.

At lunch time a nutritious hot meal is served - unless it is a day when a picnic is planned! The program can accommodate dietary restrictions.

Participation in the Day Away Program helps clients feel good about themselves and gives them the confidence to continue interacting with their environment. It has been proven that clients who participate in programs such as this are able to retain their independence for a significantly longer period of time.
