"Our Home"
The Glebe Centre Inc. has 8 "resident home areas" (units) designed to Ministry of Health standards. The newest 6-storey building was completed in 2004. The 2-storey building was completed in 1997 and upgraded later. Three types of accommodation are available on each unit: private, semi-private and basic. Private rooms have an attached private bathroom. In the semi-private and basic rooms, two residents share a bathroom.
The following characteristics for each unit combine to provide a sense of home for residents:
- Dedicated dining room, lounge and activity spaces
- Direct sunlight and a balcony or access to an enclosed courtyard
- Presence of comfortable furniture
- Acoustic panels to absorb ambient noise
- Plants and animals
- Soothing decorative colours and mood music,
Life and programming in each unit is geared to the specific population who live on the unit. For example Bronson Place 1st floor is a secure unit, specializing in Dementia Care. Similarly the 6th floor of the Residence Building (Woodlawn) is culturally specific to the seniors from the Chinese Community. Programming, language and care is provided in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
Staffing is designed to meet Ministry of Health standards, and according to the needs of the residents which are unique to each floor.
The maximum number of residents on a floor is 32, with a total of 254 residents.
Residents with dementia who may be in danger of wandering, live on the lower floors in 4 secure areas, in order to maintain their safety
and freedom.
Residents, who need daily personal care, but are able to participate in decision-making regarding that care, live on floors 3-5.
The 6th floor is designated to Chinese residents and has unique programs to enhance their language and cultural interests.
On this floor, many of the staff are Chinese-speaking.
Program Facilitators organize a regular variety of activities with input from residents and families.
Current activities include art and music, pet visits, exercise classes, baking, BBQs, teas, entertainment, outings, worship,
and much more. Activities are designed to motivate residents and encourage them to participate to their fullest.
We are proud to boast being a leader in using a sensory-enhancement program which has a dedicated space called a Snoezelen Room.
This popular program is designed to calm or stimulate residents by using a variety of sensory aids.
Physicians visit residents in their rooms, and foot care and physiotherapy is provided on each floor.
A dietitian is available to assess the dietary needs of each resident and personalize a dietary plan.
