Volunteering at the Glebe Centre

Our thanks to our volunteers!

applepie-volunteers.jpgVolunteers are an essential part of the delivery of care and services at The Glebe Centre. We are grateful to over 300 exceptional volunteers who enhance the lives of our residents, members and clients and contribute over 24,000 hours of their time each year. Volunteers work in a variety of meaningful and satisfying roles that supplement and enrich our programs and services.

Volunteer roots can be traced back to 1887 when the Ladies Auxiliary was formed. This has expanded to include diverse members of the local community, including students, residents, family members, residents' friends, community members, corporations, staff and clients.

Who volunteers?

Glebe Centre volunteers are wonderful, caring people. They are family members, friends, students, community members, staff, clients and residents. Volunteers participate in activities, services and programs seven days a week, during the day and in the evening. Volunteers receive training to work in various areas such as recreational activities, assisting at meals, friendly visiting and administration.

These persons provide their expertise to assist us in setting out the policies that enable us to run The Glebe Centre - one of the most up-to-date and reputable Long-Term Care homes in the Ottawa area and a provider of quality Community Services.

Family members often volunteer on the Family Council. These individuals typically have skills or talents that benefit The Glebe Centre and improve the quality of life for our residents. Residents also have the opportunity to volunteer and support the work of the facility.

Because a successful and rewarding volunteer experience depends on developing sound knowledge of our programs and good relationships, we have set a minimum commitment period of six months. Some special programs and student placements involve a minimum number of hours over an agreed-upon term.

Students

The Glebe Centre provides opportunities for many student placements. High school students can complete their Community Service hours here, and we have arrangements with various colleges for their PSW, RPN, RN and Social Worker students to work here during their Clinical Placements. Many students continue volunteering after completing their required hours.

How to volunteer

If you wish to volunteer, please print our Volunteer Application Form or come in and pick one up. Complete the form and return it to Volunteer Services. You will subsequently be contacted to arrange an interview. This will provide us an opportunity to get to know you, and give you more details of available opportunities. For the current list, please click here.

To ensure the safety and security of residents, members and clients, all volunteers must agree to provide a satisfactory Police Record Check and references.
